PRELUDES
Guide Questions:
1)What is a prelude? Why is that the title of the story?
Answer: Most preludes, in a literary sense, serve the purpose of giving back story or exposition for the rest of the story. For Daryll Delgado to name his story "Preludes", it suggests that there are multiple introductions that serve to give expository information for something more substantial.
2) What does Nenita feel for her husband? Why do you think she feels that way?
Answer: Nenita feels that it is not her right to take the life of her husband, let alone take action against his activities. Therefore, she blindly serves her role as an obedient wife.
3) What does her herbalista friend feel about Nenita's husband?
Answer: The herbalista is mad at Nenita's husband because of what the husband keeps on doing to Nenita. And her herbalist friend feels guilty because she gave a poisonous plant to Nenita.
4) Who was the man who died in the first paragraph?
Answer: The man that died in the first paragraph was the husband of Nenita.
5) How do you think he died? " What clues in the text helped you to reach the conclusion?
Answer: He died because of his illness.
6) What do the dried purple leaves represent?Do you think that these were used in the story? How?
Answer: For me, the dried purple leaves serve as Nenita's revenge on her husband. But as far as I've read the story, Nenita decided to not use it, because she let alone take actions against her husband's infedility, or in other words, she let karma take justice for her.
7) Who killed the man? Explain your answer?
Answer: The question itself is stereotype, because I think nobody killed him, that the man died because of his illness.
8) Does the story end with a burst of heat?What are the many meanings of heat in the story?
Answer: For me, heat is referred to as Nenita's love. It's not a typical love, either. It's a love that can't be compared to others, in short, unconditional love.
9) Why is it ironic that the widow was married to a judge?
Answer: Irony means something that is contrary to what one might expect. In the story "Preludes", the judge is described as being disliked by his community. This difference between how you would expect a judge to act and to be received and how the judge actually acts and is considered by his community is ironic.
10) Do you think, given what happened, that some form of justice was served? Why or Why Not?
Answer: Yes and no. Yes, because Nenita got the justice that she deserved. At the same time, no, because I believe that no one needs to die to get justice.
